ANA Foods Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "ANA Foods"), a specialized food trading company within the ANA Group handling approximately 10% of domestic banana distribution, has launched a circular model operation linking food and energy starting from April 2026, centered on ANA Foods' Sapporo Branch (hereinafter "Sapporo Branch"), through collaboration with Urban Energy Corporation (hereinafter "Urban Energy"), a new electricity retailer wholly owned by JFE Engineering Corporation, and J&T Recycling Corporation (hereinafter "J&T Recycling"), which handles recycling businesses within the JFE Engineering Group, and its subsidiary SAPPORO BIO FOOD RECYCLING CORPORATION (hereinafter " SAPPORO BIO FOOD RECYCLING ").
In this initiative utilizing Urban Energy's "Electricity Creation Returning®"*, J&T Recycling provides total coordination including collection and transportation arrangements for a portion of the food waste generated during banana processing at the Sapporo Branch and delivers it to SAPPORO BIO FOOD RECYCLING. The food waste is then utilized as electricity through biogas power generation via methane fermentation. Urban Energy purchases this electricity and supplies it to Sapporo Branch via the transmission and distribution network of Hokkaido Electric Power Network, Inc. As a result, a resource circulation model has been achieved in which a portion of the food waste generated through ANA Foods' own business operations is effectively utilized as energy, and a portion of the electricity used at Sapporo Branch is effectively supplied by banana-derived renewable energy.
* Electricity Creation Returning®
A unique service offered by Urban Energy since 2017 that provides electricity rate discounts based on the amount of waste when power generated from waste is purchased and supplied to the facility where the waste originated.
