A circular eco-system service centered on food recycling utilizing the "Electricity Creation Returning®"*1 power plan offered by Urban Energy Corporation (hereinafter "Urban Energy"), in collaboration with J&T Recycling Corporation (hereinafter "J&T Recycling"), both subsidiaries of JFE Engineering Corporation, has been implemented at IKEA Sendai, IKEA Tokyo-Bay, and IKEA Fukuoka Shingu starting in 2025. The service is also scheduled to be implemented at IKEA Yokohama from October.

In this scheme provided by J&T Recycling and Urban Energy, food waste from IKEA Sendai, IKEA Tokyo-Bay, and IKEA Fukuoka Shingu undergoes methane fermentation and recycling power generation at J&T Recycling's Chiba Biogas Center and group companies Tohoku Bio Food Recycle Co., Ltd. and FUKUOKA Bio Food Recycling Co., Ltd.'s food recycling facilities. Urban Energy then purchases the generated electricity and supplies it to the IKEA stores where the food waste originated.

Since 2018, Urban Energy has been providing the "Zero Emission Plan®"*2 power plan, which uses non-fossil fuel certificates designated for renewable energy against the amount of electricity used, to all IKEA stores (large-scale stores), headquarters (service office), and distribution centers nationwide, achieving zero effective CO2 emissions. The new "Electricity Creation Returning®" proposal involving J&T Recycling has been highly evaluated for its contribution to improving IKEA Japan's food recycling rate and achieving SDGs goals. J&T Recycling, Urban Energy, and IKEA Japan will continue to explore the implementation of the "Electricity Creation Returning®" service at other IKEA Japan stores.

The JFE Engineering Group will continue to expand and promote environmentally conscious services, contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.

*1 "Electricity Creation Returning®"
A unique service offered by Urban Energy since 2017 that provides electricity rate discounts based on the amount of waste when power generated from waste is purchased and supplied to the facility where the waste originated.

A plan that supplies 100% renewable energy by combining the customer's entire electricity usage with non-fossil fuel certificates designated for renewable energy, achieving zero adjusted CO2 emission coefficient.
